The Future of Design

This weeks lecture saw us explore the future, or rather what our thoughts on the future were. Asking questions like; Are things getting better in the world?, Can you as an individual do anything to influence the world in its path? There is a couple of ways to answer these questions, mainly split between positive and negative outlooks, and our class was quite divided amongst the two. Some people arguing that the world is falling apart and there isn’t much of anything we can go about to stop it from where we are. Others having the outlook that everything is amazing in the world and only getting better and having an attitude that every little thing they do is going to make an impact and save the world.

Now I know that what I’ve said in the last paragraph may be a slight exaggeration, but it set the scale of what we were dealing with in the class, and of what you might expect to hear from anyone you ask those questions. My personal stance on the matter, (you can probably guess if you know me or have read some of my previous blogs), Is being essentially in the middle of it all.

There are always terrible things that will be going on in the world, that doesn’t mean that things are getting worse. There will always be somebody making a major innovation and driving humanity forward, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that things are getting better. They are what they are and will continue to be that way as long as humans exist. I do try and make a difference where I can, be that through helping others when they are stuck or doing my part and recycling things and other little things like that, do I think that I might come up with a way to make an impact that changes the way the world works… Well I can dream about it.

Dreaming things up is what we as designers are supposedly good at, but we as people and individuals everywhere, have our own experiences (some might call that baggage) that cause us to have preconceived ideas and prejudices, opinions, worldviews and moral codes that often limit our work. We should be dreaming, imagining, predicting, mapping, believing, creating and pushing ourselves further than we ever thought possible. (M. McMahon 2020)

The way I see things, currently there are a lot of specific fields, each one takes a different perspective when it comes to designing things. We as Designers should be able to get all these people to work together, becoming a jack of all trades perhaps? Or would we be then considered a Linguist? Speaking all the different types of industry fluently and being able to learn and adapt to any slang dialect that we may come across while out there in the world.

The future of design, is one of fiction. We can and will make it up completely as we go along. If we dream things up, so be it. If someone else comes up with the idea but doesn’t know how to make it come alive, we will help them. If a piece of technology needs to be invented to further us in our ideas, it will be done. The past was yesterday we learn from it, we can’t do much about what is going to happen tomorrow as hell can do our best to make the most of the times we are in right now.

Here are some links to videos which I thought were well worth a watch that were suggested to us in class.

Bjarke Ingels: Architecture should be more like Minecraft
